New
Sailing Programme, 28th January 2019
As a result of the club survey, AGM comments and committee discussions, this year sees a significant change to the structure of the sailing/events programme and trophies. For example, pursuit races will be replaced by a general race series. Rules for other trophies have also been modified to allow them to be awarded fairly. Personal handicaps will be applied on an ongoing basis to various race series.
Two races will continue to be held at 13.30 and 15.30 on Sundays. Racing during the summer months has been interspersed with activity days to allow wider member participation. Members can see the changes in their new membership cards.
The new sailing programme can be found on the Activities page.

Training, 23rd July 2017
This season, training is being provided in a new way. A training session was held on Sunday 23rd July starting at 10.30. Training was tailored to the level required (beginner, improver, racing). The training officer and helpers were on hand to provide the level of training requested. With informal club racing taking place thereafter, those participating were encouraged to continue sailing during that day. It is hoped that some will progress to club racing where they will be more than welcomed, but leisure sailors are equally welcome.

Funeral
of Bill Shannon, 16th February 2017
Club member Dick Arnold contributed the following reminiscences following the recent death of former member Bill Shannon.
It was with sadness that Colin Boyd, Trevor and Ann Cragg, and Dick Arnold attended the funeral of long-time past member Bill Shannon. Previous and country members were also present: David Vass, Ian MacMillan and Brian Morris. The service of celebration and cremation was held at Seafield crematorium in Edinburgh on 16th February and was well attended. Bill would have turned 80 this year.
Bill, Jenny and sons David and Ian were members of the club when Dick and Lee Arnold joined in 1973, and were an active family in the club during those early days. They continued as members until the mid-1980s when Bill had a promotion to Edinburgh where the family moved to live.
In the main, Bill sailed an Enterprise dinghy, graduating later to a glass fibre version, but he did have a short spell sailing a Solo. There is a great photo of Bill standing forlornly on the inverted hull of his Solo holding on for dear life to the centreboard which seemed nearly as tall as he was. He did not sail it for long after that!
Bill was very friendly with Steve Holden another former member who died last autumn. They left the club to sail together in a day sailing boat on Loch Lomond. Bill kept in touch with the club and attended the BBC filming of Shirley Robertson at Loch Ard. We had spoken to Bill and Jenny at Steve’s funeral and he seemed in good health. Apparently he suffered a stroke at Christmas, followed by a fatal heart attack two weeks or so ago.
Bill’s son David and his then girlfriend, now his wife, continued sailing at Loch Ard for a number of years. It was good to briefly meet up with them after all these years. A photo of Bill, wife Jenny and Shirley Robertson taken at a party in 1999 appears below. (Click to see a larger version.)

The club sends its condolences and best wishes for the future to Jenny and the family.

Thanks
from Gartmore Primary School, 4th November 2016
The club was delighted to receive thank-you letters from a number of pupils at Gartmore Primary who attended a sailing taster event at the club. Typical of the responses was:
Thank you very much for the amazing afternoon on the beautiful waters of Kinlochard. I learned how to steer the boat, and what parts of the boat are what and where they go. I also learned how to see when the wind is coming and to always keep an eye on the boom.
My favourite part of the trip was when I steered the boat round the buoy and paddling when the wind dropped. I loved the way the wind controlled the boat's acceleration.
Thank you for your time. We had great fun in the extraordinary environment of Kinlochard.

Saturday was a mixture of windy gusts that saw boats planing well, combined with occasional rain and drops in the wind. Rob Cordingley in a Flying Fifteen started the weekend by taking line honours in the first three races, but lost out to Robert Signer who managed to keep up in his Solo to win on handicap. On Sunday the predicted heavy winds did not appear. This was again to the lighter Solo's advantage, which allowed Robert Signer to take race 4 and 5 line honours just in front of Rob Cordingley. Throughout the weekend there was tight racing between Don Jamie (Bardowie SC) and Mike Lidwell (Cove SC) in Solos, ending in just a one-point difference at the end of the day. The top placings were as follows:

Regatta, 10th/11th August 2013
There was a good turnout for the annual club regatta, including a number of visitors.
The first day of racing was sailed in variable and somewhat frustrating winds. Races 1 and 2 suited the Solos, which did well in the placings. Race 3 started with light winds that spread the fleet very widely. The main results for the first day were 1st Don Jamie (Solo, CCC Bardowie), 2nd Trevor Cragg (Flying Fifteen, Loch Ard SC), 3rd Mike Lidwell (Solo, Cove SC).
The second day of racing was sailed in much brisker winds that were challenging at times. This time, the winds favoured the Flying Fifteens. The main results for the second day were 1st Trevor Cragg (Flying Fifteen, Loch Ard SC), 2nd Colin Boyd (Flying Fifteen, Loch Ard SC), 3rd Mike Lidwell (Solo, Cove SC).

Robert Signer (Flying Fifteen) and Ken Turner (Solo) established an early lead over the rest of the fleet, and continued to stay ahead despite the fluky winds. On boat handicap, Ken Turner came in first, followed by Robert Signer, then Joe Carr (Heron).

Club
Regatta, 11th and 12th August 2012
The Club annual regatta saw a good turnout of participants and good sailing conditions. Saturday was overcast with a moderate and steady Easterly. Sunday brought sunny spells and a brisker Easterly (causing a few capsizes during gybes). One Club member managed to distinguish himself by sailing three types of dinghy during the four races! Racing in the double-handed category was very close, with the top placing being decided only by a tie-break.
Prizes were awarded in three categories. For single-handers, the main placings were: 1st Duncan Turner (Laser, Solo), 2nd Jeff Heath (Solo), 3rd Joe Carr (Heron). For double-handers, the main placings were: 1st Robert Signer (Flying Fifteen), 2nd Colin Boyd (Flying Fifteen), 3rd Dick Arnold (Flying Fifteen). The Altskeith Cup was awarded for best overall performance to Robert Signer.

Robertson Visit to Club, 10th July 2012
The Club was pleased to welcome honorary member Shirley Robertson, Olympics gold medallist, back to the Club this week along with a film crew from the BBC. This was for a programme on past Olympians, the origins of their interest in their respective sports, and where they started from. The programme will be aired during this year's games.
To celebrate the day the Club invited as many members, past and present, who were members when Shirley was a girl sailor at the club. Those who were able to come along appear below. Holidays limited attendance, but it was great to see old faces again. A group of youngsters from the ATC were also at the Club and added extra youth to the occasion. They thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu sailing. Pictures from the event appear below. (Click to see a larger version.) See also the 24th July news for the short video produced by the BBC during Shirley's visit.

ATC
Cadet Event, 18th June 2012
The weather was warm and sunny after for a visit to the club of eight ATC cadets and two leaders. The wind was gently variable and light throughout. The cadets received an initial white-board theoretical briefing in the clubhouse. They then saw how to rig our GP14 outside on the grass. Instruction was expanded and demonstrated using this boat.
The cadets were then all taken onto the water with club members helming. Each cadet also had a chance to ride in the RIB, which proved popular. The cadets were focused, attentive and disciplined during their visit. They quickly picked up the basics and were able to take turns helming the boats under supervision.
After lunch we rigged one of their Ensigns. Following familiarisation, two cadets were let loose in her by themselves. Other cadets went out on our Toppers and canoes by themselves. Other dinghies set sail again too with their owners aboard. The wind picked up slightly, and it was a delight to hear the cadet's cries of excitement (tinged with panic!) echoing across the loch when an occasional small gust hit them and gave them something to think about. All in all this was a really successful day with ideal conditions.
The following photograph shows training officer Dick Arnold with Nigel Kelly of the club and the visiting cadets. (Click to see a larger version.)

Re-Opened, 8th April 2012
The club re-opened with a race for the President's Plate. This was sailed in rather variable winds, some competitors benefiting from localised gusts. Colin and Ann Boyd (Flying Fifteen) established an early lead and went on to win the race. Greg and Martha Cullen (Sport 16) came second, while Ken Turner (Solo) was third. The race also saw the maiden voyages of a Graduate (Chris and Sarah Cullen) and a B14 (Duncan and Jamie Turner).

Drennan
Trophy, 30th October 2011
The final race of the season (for the Drennan Trophy) was sailed in light and variable winds. Initially the fleet remained fairly closely bunched. However, as individual boats managed to get the benefit of the patchy winds the fleet soon spread out. Ken Turner (Solo) was the winner on the basis of boat and personal handicaps.
Racing has now finished for the season, to resume in April 2012.
Club Regatta, 20th/21st August 2011
There was a good turnout for the club's annual regatta, including a number of visitors. Saturday was warm and sunny. For the first race, the winds were variable from force 4 to nil. The winds remained a bit steadier for the second race. Sunday was overcast but stayed dry. The winds were around force 3, occasionally allowing planing. Big gains were to be had in reading the wind-shifts correctly. The top placings were: 1st Trevor Cragg (Flying Fifteen), 2nd Dick Arnold (Flying Fifteen Silver), 3rd Joe Carr (Heron). Club Prizegiving, 5th December 2010
The club's annual prizegiving was held on 5th December. The main winnders were: Dick Arnold (Admirals, Founders Shield, Gartmore Cup, Round The Island Race), Ann Boyd (Ladies Cup), Colin Boyd (Trossachs Cup), Joe Carr (Slow Handicap), Trevor Cragg (Uffa Quaich), Stuart Davidson (Flying 15 Classic), Ray Davidson-Carr (Best Crew), Fraser Hamilton (Cadet Trophy), John Harrington (Novices Cup), Nigel Kelly (Fast Handicap), Barrie McLean (Marathon Race, Opening Day Race), Robert Signer (Altskeith Cup, Autumn Points, Milligan 41, Solo Cup, Spring Points). See the full results for more details.
Club racing resumes in April 2011.
Solo Travellers Event, 9th October 2010
The Solo Travellers Event was held on 9th October with 28 boats attending - a record for this class at Loch Ard. Contrary to the usual Solo event weather at Loch Ard, the day brought dry if rather dull weather with brisk SE winds. Blistering gusts of around 25 mph added to the excitement.
The first race started on time at the No. 1 mark, with a beat to No. 0, then a zig-zag beating back to the start line. There were plenty of gybes! The second race followed the same course, but the wind had abated and at times disappeared completely for short periods. The third race, run back to back with the second, saw the wind return to strength. By this time, some of the helms had decided that enough was enough and had headed back to the shore. There were several capsizes throughout the day. One or two were in the bay: leaving or approaching the shore was not particularly easy, given the onshore wind and wave conditions.
Winners of the Loch Ard event were 1st David Sword (CCC Bardowie), 2nd David Redpath (St Mary's Loch), and 3rd Kevan Gibb (Largo Bay). This being the final event in the six-event series of the Solo Travellers, the prize for overall champion was awarded (being won by Kevan Gibb).
Thanks were given to all who helped out, especially Trevor Cragg (Race Officer) and Ann Boyd (who dealt with catering and serving the excellent hot pies donated by Sword's Bakeries).

Club Regatta, 14th and 15th August 2010
The annual club regatta saw a good turnout of competitors. Saturday brought overcast skies and light winds. Sunday saw warm sunshine, with light winds that gradually freshened as the day progressed.
The first race on Saturday was sailed in light winds, favouring the lighter boats. Although Barrie McLean and Ken Turner (both in Solos) crossed the finishing line first, Joe Carr (Heron) came first on boat handicap. The second race had even lighter winds, making for testing conditions. This time Barrie McLean built up an impressive lead and took first place.
The first race on Sunday was sailed in light winds that died away to nothing just as the first boats crossed the finishing line. Barrie McLean again took the honours. A slightly better wind in the second race kept most of the fleet fairly bunched, with Solos managing to keep up with Flying Fifteens. This time, Robert Signer (Solo) came first. For the final race, the wind finally picked up to an occasional Force 3. Although Flying Fifteens were at last able to fly spinnakers, this was not enough to give them a convincing lead. Robert Signer managed to finish among the leading boats, giving him another first place and the overall regatta lead.
The main placings were: 1st Robert Signer (Solo), 2nd Barrie McLean (Solo), 3rd Joe Carr (Heron), 4th Ken Turner (Solo), 5th Sandy Howit (Flying Fifteen).
Marathon Race, 15th July 2010
This annual event was sailed in generally light and variable winds. As the race lasts 2.5 hours, there was a wide variation in sailing conditions. Barrie McLean (Solo) established an early lead, though with Dick Arnold (Solo) a short distance behind for most of the race. Only on the last run did Barrie extend his lead, finishing convincingly in first place. Dick did, however, finish in second place. Ken Turner (Solo) took third place, so it was evidently a day for Solo sailors!
Flying Fifteen Scottish Area Championship, 8th/9th May 2010
The club was delighted to welcome a fleet of 37 Flying Fifteens for the BIFFA Scottish championships from as far away as Windermere, Derwent, Hayling Island and Dovestone. This event was a qualifier for the world championships to be held at Hayling Island next year.
Those who decided to arrive on the Friday were welcomed by a steady Force 3 coming down the loch and an exciting sail. The overnight low temperatures, however, changed the weather to give the loch a Saturday morning mist rising from calm waters. As the morning progressed, the sunshine and remaining competitors arrived, along with a gentle NE wind.
A short delay to the start of the first race was needed to allow all the 37 boats to get afloat. Tensions were high in the two fleets as they jarred for position in the gusts and shifting winds. By sticking close to the right bank and picking up a little zephyr of wind from the hills, the team of Steve Goacher/Phil Evans opened a 30 second lead over David McKee/Chris Hewkin to take the first race and the 'Campbeltown Council Trophy'. David and Chris only just held their second place over a number of other boats. Meanwhile the classic/silver fleet were managing to catch up the main fleet, with Bobby Salmond/Robert Till just beating John McMillan/Stan Wichlaj to the finish.
Race 2 began with the start sequence stopped while the course was rearranged due to a 90 degree wind shift. This, unfortunately, made the first beat a mad short dash across the loch. With two full circuits completed, the finish flag was hoisted with impending dying winds. All competitors completed the last circuit before the wind calmed. The classic fleet crossed the finish within seconds of each other, which saw Dan Challis/Kirsten Shaughessy take first place and the 'Salmond Salver' over John McMillan/Stan Wichlaj. The main fleet saw a shake-up of places for the previous race top 10. Gill Browing/Simon Wetherill judged to perfection a last-minute wind shift just before the start, popping out by the committee boat and leading from the first mark. They finished a couple of lengths ahead of two boats - John Hadesty/Roger Errington and Charles Apthorp/Alan Green, who were separated by mere inches crossing the line.
With racing over for the day all the competitors retired to the local village hall, where a sumptuous evening meal had been organised by the club. After much feasting there was entertainment from Gary Speirs, with some home-brew narratives and Scottish folk music
Sunday dawned from a cold night to give another morning of light winds. Ever hopeful, the race office tried four or five times to set a course. They even had the start clock down to five seconds before calling a halt due to the wind suddenly dying and shifting drastically. With the heaviest of hearts and after 90 minutes of false starts, the race officer decided to call a halt to the rest of the day's racing, being mindful of the distances that competitors had to travel. The overall results had to depend on the two races from Saturday.
The classic/silver fleet had a three-way tie-break in operation, with the classic boat of Dan Challis/Kirsten Shaughessy taking first place for the trophy over Bobby Salmond/Robert Till and John McMillan/Stan Wichlaj. The first silver boat was Scott Train/Graham Lamond.
The main fleet had its own tie-breaks for second and third places, with John Hadesty/Roger Errington taking second over Graham Vails/Chris Turner. The overall winner was Steve Goacher/Phil Evans with a clear 2 points ahead of the others to take the 'Skelly Trophy'.
The Lord Provost of Stirling, Fergus Wood, then presented the prizes and silverware as the competitors departed to all corners of the UK.
Results for the Classic and Silver Flying Fifteen fleets were as follows:

Drennan
Trophy, 25th October 2009
During the night and early morning before this final event of the LASC sailing season, the wind was howling like a banshee and the trees were bending before it. In the event, the wind dropped and the race was not at all as exciting as anticipated. The wind strength varied unpredictably and was never above force 4.
Trevor Cragg in his Flying Fifteen led the fleet for most of the time, though it is probable that the Solo leaders were near enough to be ahead on handicap. An unfortunate area of calm allowed many boats to draw much closer. The Drennan is sailed on personal handicap, which this year was derived from the Gartmore and Trossachs series. The corrected result was as follows: 1st Jeff Heath, 2nd Barrie McLean, 3rd Robert Signer.
Solo
Travellers Event, 17th October 2009
19 Solos took part in this event, which was the last in the 2009 series. The weather was glorious, clear, sunny and bright but unfortunately lacked sufficient wind to provide an exciting sail for all entrants. The first of the three races almost had to be stopped as the light breeze which was present at the start died away to almost nothing. Fortunately the wind returned and improved very slightly, allowing three races to be completed back-to-back. The planned short comfort stop was abandoned in favour of using the breeze when it was available - a wise decision indeed, as the later afternoon proved windless. Three club members took part in the races, with Barrie McLean finishing a creditable fourth. The spectators, race officials and shore-based helpers had a pleasant day in the Autumnal sunshine.
The top placings were: 1st Kevan Gibb (East Lothian YC), 2nd Keith Milroy (East Lothian YC), 3rd Gordon Tosh (Montrose SC), 4th Barrie McLean (Loch Ard SC), 5th Jim Allan (Newburgh SC).
Club Regatta, 15th-16th August 2009
There were 12 entrants in all for the regatta: six Solos, two Flying Fifteens, two Wayfarers, a Heron and a GP 14. It was particularly pleasant to welcome two visitors from CCC Bardowie sailing Solos. The weather on Saturday was a blustery South Westerly, increasing in strength as the afternoon wore on. The first race was exciting to say the least, and the Solos acquitted themselves well - with only one capsize despite the circumstances. Due to the wind conditions, the second race was abandoned just before the start.
On Sunday the weather for the first race was similar to Saturday, but the wind gradually moderated as the afternoon progressed, being relatively light by the third race of the day. Sailing was good and the competition close.
The winner of the Altskeith Cup, and overall regatta winner, was Robert Signer (Solo). Second was Barrie McLean (Solo), third was Don Jamie (Solo, one of our visitors), fourth was Richard Arnold (Solo). The Cup will be presented at the AGM in December.
Mirror
Scottish National Championships, 4th-5th July 2009
This event was held at the club during a spell of warm and pleasant weather. The winds were light and variable, which tested the skills and patience of the contestants, and also of the race officers! Five races were held, three back-to-back on Saturday, and two back-to-back on Sunday. The contestant's ages ranged from 9 years to 73 years.
The consistent sailing of the Lulham-Robinson brothers, Matt and Ben, just outclassed the veteran single-handed sailor John Hugo, although it was a close thing at times. John and Clare Peterson came a close third overall. The three boats from Shetland Sailing Centre acquitted themselves creditably, especially the novice sailors who were accustomed to sailing in sea winds rather than the shifting winds of a hill-surrounded loch. The oldest boat in the contest (766) was competitively sailed by Mike Heath and his daughter Caroline.
This is the first time in recent years that so many Mirror dinghies have been seen at the club. In years past they featured strongly as many archive pictures show. It is hoped that this visit may provide inspiration to members to take up sailing these elegant, exciting and serviceable little boats.
Trophies were awarded as follows:
- Mirror Champions: Matt and Ben Lulham-Robinson (Yeadon/Otley/Hollingworth Lake)
- Single Handed Trophy: John Hugo (Annandale SC)
- Youth Trophy: John and Clare Peterson (Whitstable YC)
- Junior Trophy: Craig Forrest and Callum Mustard (Shetland Sailing Centre)
- Master's Trophy: Mike and Caroline Heath (Aberdeen and Stonehaven YC)
- Team Trophy: Shetland Sailing Centre team

The club is now closed until April 2009.
Solo
Travellers Event, 4th October 2008
The club welcomed a good turn-out of Solo class sailors to a Travellers Event on 4th October. The winds were very light for the first race, but improved a bit for the rest of the afternoon. The main placings from the event were: 1st Kevan Gibb (Largo Bay), 2nd Barrie McLean (Loch Ard), 3rd Ali Gordon (CCC Bardowie).
This was the last such Solo event of the season. Two Club members did well among the 38 entrants for the entire Travellers series: Robert Signer achieved 5th place overall, and Barrie McLean achieved 7th place overall.
40th
Anniversary Regatta, 20th-21st September 2008
The club's 40th anniversary regatta saw a good turnout of members. Saturday was overcast with very light and fitful winds, the smaller boats being able to make the best of these. Sunday brought pleasant sunshine with moderate but variable winds, the larger boats having an opportunity to fly their spinnakers to good effect. On corrected times, the main placings overall were: 1st Robert Signer (Solo), 2nd Barrie McLean (Solo), 3rd Colin and Ann Boyd (Flying Fifteen), 4th John and Syliva Hull (Flying Fifteen), 5th Trevor Crag and Ray Davidson-Carr (Flying Fifteen).
Marathon
Race, 20th July 2008
The annual marathon race was held in somewhat testing conditions, with the wind gusting to force 5. Remarkably, all competitors (even the author of this web page!) avoided a capsize. On corrected times, the main placings were: 1st Robert Signer (Solo), 2nd Trevor Crag and Ray Davidson-Carr (Flying Fifteen), 3rd Dick Arnold (Solo).
Club

Solo
Travellers Event, 15th September 2007
17 entrants visited the club to take part in the last race of the Solo Travellers Series for 2007. Nine clubs were represented, including three entrants from LASC. The racing took place under rather trying circumstances of very light and variable winds. The Race Officer did his best to provide starts into the wind, and to his credit managed this well. The helms are to be congratulated for their persistence and for managing to finish so many races so creditably.
First place went to Gordon Tosh of Montrose SC with 8 points, second place to Kevan Gibb of Largo Bay SC with 9 points, and third place to James Allan of Newburgh SC with 12 points. Barrie McLean of LASC finished fifth with 14 points, and the other two LASC entrants did credit to our club too.

Fun
Regatta, 18th July 2004
The club's annual Fun Regatta was held on an afternoon of mixed but pleasant weather. The theme this year was nautical Cluedo! The first race, to the Altskeith, was won by Lewis and Laura. The second race, back to clubhouse, was won by Grant and Corrie. Thanks are due to the organisers for a truly fun day.
Flying
Fifteen Championship, 19th/20th June 2004
The club was delighted to host the Flying Fifteen Scottish Championship on 19th and 20th June, with an excellent turnout from club members and further afield. The British Isles Flying Fifteen Association had previously held their Scottish Championships at Loch Ard in 2002. 29 boats, of which 21 were visitors, enjoyed a pleasant weekend of sailing, with winds varying from force 0 to short spells of force 4. The wind was generally from the north west, though the direction varied greatly throughout the weekend.
There were two races on both days, with the Silver and Classic fleets racing together separately from the main fleet. The first race had an eventful start with two general recalls in the main fleet, resulting in the Silver/Classic boats leading round the course. Subsequent races had more orderly starts, with close competition between the leading boats.
Steve Goacher and Phil Evans from Royal Windermere gave a copybook demonstration of how to sail, winning all four races and consequently all the trophies. They were followed by Scott Beattie and John Somerville from Bassenthwaite, who were second in three races. David and Susan Giles were second in the remaining race.
The winners of the Silver series were Giles Passmore and Stephen Gibbon from Keilder Water, while the Classic was won by Graham Lamond and Scott Train from South Windermere, both boats winning all four races in their class.

Fun
Regatta, 27th July 2003
The theme of this year's fun regatta was "survival", with competitors having to collect a number of survival items from around the loch. These items ranged from water containers (carried precariously in the force 4 winds) and mobile phones (curiously resembling bricks). The overall winner of the Altskeith Cup was Colin Boyd (with Anne and Emma). Runners up, in second equal position, were Robert Signer and Joe Hayes. A special prize for bravery went to Ken Harden (with Roger). The cadet prize was awarded to Gordon Tatnell.
Informal
Regatta, 21st/22nd June 2003
Applying personal handicaps, first place went to Diane Wink (Laser), second place to Jeff Heath (Laser), third place to Tony Hinton (Flying Fifteen), and fourth place to Shane Booth (Laser EPS).
Death of
John Whitehead, 21st December 2002
The Club was saddened to hear of John Whitehead's death. John was a
long-standing member of the Club. As Treasurer for many years, he managed
the Club finances with great care and astuteness. John will be greatly
missed.
Club
Regatta, 14th/15th September 2002
The regatta weekend at Loch Ard Sailing Club was bright and sunny.
Unfortunately it was also a weekend of light winds. Saturday permitted only one
race before the wind totally vanished and sunbathing began. Sunday started with
light winds and low cloud/mist covering the loch. After lunch a little more wind
finally came (usual at Loch Ard) and two races were run. See the table below for
the general handicap results. The handicap fleet of club members saw James
Gerard (Loch Ard) take honours for the weekend over the two visiting boats:
Penny Vere (Bardowie Loch) and Donald Angus (Bardowie Loch). Chris Sugden put in
a valiant last minute bid, taking honours for the last race of the day.

English/French Sailing Dictionary, 22nd August 2002
Ken Turner, a club member, has created an online English/French dictionary of sailing terms. Anyone sailing in French-speaking waters might find it handy for specialised terms.
Sailing
Race Rules Program for Hand-Held Computers, 21st August 2002
Ken Turner, a club member, has released a program that supports the rules of sailing races. It allows a race scenario to be drawn (and stored if desired). The program then analyses the scenario and reports the rules that apply. The program is mainly designed to run on hand-held computers (PDAs) like the Palm, Handspring or Pocket PC, though it can also be run on a standard computer. The program is available free under the GNU General Public licence. See the online description for more details.
Flying
Fifteen Championship, 8th/9th June 2002

Shirley
Robertson Celebrated, 20th October 2000
On 20th October 2000, Loch Ard Sailing Club joined in celebrating the success of Shirley Robertson, who won a coveted gold medal for sailing in the Sydney Olympics. Shirley's early days learning to sail started at Loch Ard. During the course of the evening, Shirley was awarded honorary life membership of the club by Trevor Cragg, the club's President, in recognition of her achievement.
Club members joined Shirley's parents and friends for the event in Blairlogie Village Hall. George MacDonald, past club member and great enthusiast, arranged for the interior of the hall to be decorated as a mini Sydney harbour complete with bridge!
